Quinta das Bageiras
Frederico and his father Mario Sergio are the third and fourth generations of the Nuno family who make wine in the north of the Bairrada region. They make wines and espumantes that are very easily recognizable for their distinct character.
Baga takes a leading role in this.
Mario Sergio has been making wine for years with profound respect for the nature in which he works and the tradition on which he builds. Son Nuno continues that line. Their approach to espumantes is telling: at Quinta das Bageiras, an espumante comes to market only as Bruto Natural or else not at all. In other words, the Nunos refuse to add sugar to their bubbles, which they consider a camouflage of flavor.
If the harvest is not good enough to pull the bubbles in their pure form in bottle, they simply prefer not to make bubbles. They also extend this attitude to their white and red wines. This results in traditional Bairradas that always have an enormous storage potential.
For several years, things have not been going well between
the Nuno family and the region's commission that awards the appellation. Several times a wine from Bageiras has been rejected (for example, because the commission considered it too acidic). Since Mario Sergio had little sympathy for this, he released his wine with a large stamp 'Chumbado' on the label, which freely translated means rejected. We have yet to taste in any Chumbado a reason not to import the wine.
