Quinta da Murta
French native Franck Bodin took over the vineyards of Quinta da Murta in 2011, releasing a beautiful estate in a historic area just on the northern border of Lisboa. It is said to be birthplace of the wonderfully fresh Arinto grape.
Bucelas, where Quinta da Murta is located, is a small DOC just above Lisboa where wine has been produced since Roman times. In the second half of the 16th century, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, the popularity of the white wines of Bucelas peaked. The English drank a fortified version they called Charneco. The wine is thus praised in Shakespeare's Henry VI.
The Duke of Wellington later had an important hand in the wide spread of wine from Bucelas in Britain. As a matter of fact, so did other wines from the regions around Lisboa. That historical success explains why today we find a remarkably large concentration of DOCs around Lisboa.
Bucelas is mentioned in the same breath with the grape that dominates the region, the Arinto.
It thrives perfectly on the local soils of marl and limestone, producing wines with excellent freshness and solid ageing potential.
When Franck Bodin started working with the Arinto, he decided to grow the grapes more naturally than his predecessors.
With this he laid the foundation for a beautiful white wine that gives the best of itself especially after several years of bottle aging. That is also why we then offer this Murta remarkably older vintages.
