CARM
CARM was our first discovery in Portugal at the time. At a tasting of all kinds of olive oils in a small restaurant in Evora, CARM's quality stood out. Afterwards, the Madeira family also turned out to make very good wine.
Casa Agricola Roboredo Madeira first built a great reputation in Portugal for producing olive oil. During our first visit to Portugal, it was that oil that caught our attention. Since we had not yet found our way to the good wine producers, discovering interesting wines was pretty disappointing that first time. So we decided to start importing olive oil, and so on our next visit to Portugal we met the first winemaker with whom we clicked.
Rui Madeira, the son of the olive oil producer, had just started making wine as a young oenologist. We liked his wine and that was the start of The Portugal Collection.
CARM's wines have also become a reference by now. With their rather rich style, they are an exponent of Douro Superior. The vineyards are located in Almendra, not so far from the border with Spain. Warm summers prevail here.
As a winemaker, you have to be vigilant about grape ripeness. By using grapes from cooler, higher altitude vineyards and harvesting in a timely manner, you can avoid overripeness and produce a powerful style of wine that still manages to maintain balance.
