PRODUCERS
Caves São João
In 1920, 3 brothers of the Costa family founded the wine trade Caves São João. The intention was to distribute wines from the Douro but they soon began their own production of sparkling wines. The knowledge of an oenologist from Champagne was called upon, and the quality was right from the start.
The Bairrada region, where Caves São João is located, has the ideal, cool climate to produce excellent Espumantes. Unsurprisingly, you will find excellent bubbles here.
In the early 1950s, the range is expanded to include wines from the Bairrada and neighboring Dão. The former are marketed under the label "Frei João," and the Dãos are labeled "Porta dos Cavaleiros.
Since 1952, reserves have been built up in the cellars, allowing us today at Caves São João to walk through 50 years of history of two very interesting wine regions. Bairrada and Dão are blessed with a mild climate that allows the production of wines with exceptional aging potential.
