Beiorte Cidade 2021

Region: Dão

Producer: Beiorte

João Costa, a man from the region, started making his own wine in 2020 with a small vineyard of 1.2ha located in the south of the Dão near Oliveira do Hospital. The vineyard is special, not only because it dates from 1960 and is therefore now more than 60 years old, but especially because the planting was done under the supervision of Alberto Vilhena. He was the driving force behind the Centro de Estudos Vitivinícolas do Dão, which was founded in 1946 to research the best viticultural practices of the region. The man turned out to be a visionary. Not only are some of the vineyards he planted still considered the best in the region today, he also made wines that are still standing after decades of maturation and are considered the benchmark for new winemakers.
The vineyard for this Beiorte Cidade is located at an altitude of 500m and is oriented north, so it is never exposed to heat.

João harvested the grapes by hand at the end of September 2021 and let them macerate for 10 days in an open fermentation vat after destemming. The fermentation took place solely on the basis of the grape's own yeasts and without temperature control.
After natural clarification, bottling took place in August 2023.
